The Munsters: a lovely family, a frightening shopping basket?

MC’s preview desk · Announced specifications, not a hands-on review · Checked 20 October 2026

I have a soft spot for this household. The Munsters’ great joke is not simply that monsters live in suburbia; it is their complete confidence that they are the normal ones. Frankly, after a few minutes browsing collector prices, I am beginning to see their point. Welcome to the screening room. Please leave muddy boots—and panic purchases—by the door.

What Imprint says is coming

Via Vision lists fourteen Blu-rays covering all seventy original episodes, plus Munster, Go Home!, The Munsters’ Revenge and Here Come the Munsters. Imprint says the series has new 1080p restorations from 35mm fine-grain negatives, with its original 1.33:1 framing, mono sound and English HOH subtitles. Seventeen new episode commentaries join archival extras and a restoration comparison.

The oversized holographic hardbox holds lenticular cases, a hardcover episode guide, a folded poster and lobby cards. Fred Gwynne, Yvonne De Carlo and Al Lewis lead the original family as Herman, Lily and Grandpa. The appeal is not merely a shelf ornament: it is the possibility of giving familiar comic performances a carefully preserved presentation.

First, let us check the currency

The official listing currently shows AUD $349.95, alongside AUD $379.95. Those are Australian dollars—not a quoted US $400 price. A US buyer’s actual total depends on the exchange rate, seller, shipping and any applicable charges. Check the checkout currency and final delivered cost before deciding. Availability and preorder wording on the page are also changeable; this preview is not a stock promise.

Does MC think it is too expensive?

It is a premium purchase, and I would not dismiss anyone who finds it too steep. Loving Herman does not require financing Grandpa’s laboratory. For someone who wants the series, the restoration is the important part; an elaborate box is an optional pleasure. For a devoted collector who wants the films, books, extras and presentation together, the package has a more persuasive case.

Fourteen discs help explain the scale of the release, but dividing the price by the disc count does not prove value. The question is how much of the material you will use, how well it is presented, and whether the delivered price fits your budget. I would rather keep a comfortable chair and enjoy the episodes than buy an enormous hardbox and have to sit on it.

What I want to examine before a real verdict

How naturally does grain survive? Are faces and dark interiors detailed without looking scrubbed? Is the mono clear and stable? How useful are the new commentaries and episode guide? Those answers need the actual discs. An announced restoration deserves interest, not an invented picture-quality score.

MC’s take: enthusiastic about the family, interested in the restoration, cautious about the premium. Would a simpler series-only release suit you better, or is this the full Mockingbird Lane treatment you have been waiting for?
